Summary: Obi-Wan broods on a very special anniversary.
Author's Notes: I did my best to keep this from becoming an Obi/Padme piece and concentrate on keeping it a possible canonical occurence. I think I did alright :) At least he didn't kill me for going back to that most hated and over-talked of occurence, as briefly as I did. This would be progress, I'm thinking.

-------

The majestic spires of Theed Palace still marked the skyline as Obi-Wan remembered it. Tall and imposing each wall rose, encasing whatever passed for a government in these days of darkness. The absence of the moon was fitting, carrying with it both physical and symbolic meaning; since the rise of the Empire no place was safe for the once proud and loyal members of the Republic. They had been forced to enshroud their allegiances under the mask of false submission to the new regime. Tonight's darkness served as such a mask for him, one of - if not the - last of the Jedi Order. His was one of stealth not surrender, however, and he used it well. The shadows were his ally as he crossed the outskirts of the city and headed towards the small graveyard reserved for the planet's most revered and glorious dead.

He couldn't believe that a year had passed since the fires of Mustafar and the birth of both abomination and hope. One Galactic Standard Year and it had passed so very swiftly, despite his exile. He had heard rumours of her post-mortem return and subsequent burial. He was pleased to hear that the ruse of her pregnancy and the still-born child within her had been a success. Her children now had at least a half a chance at growing up anonymously. Images of her smile and of the first time they had met danced before him, as he picked his way along the cemetery's border, not daring to venture further inside just yet. He took the time to make a complete circuit, allowing his memories of the Senator he had come to respect so deeply to fill him. She would have made a formidable Jedi, had she the gift of the Force. But the Order's loss was the Republic's gain, as she had grown into a strong and capable champion for truth and true justice.

He replayed the encounter just prior to his confrontation with Anakin, sighing softly as he recalled the heated argument he had overheard, and her impassioned pleas to her lover and husband. With a shake of his head, he entered the sacred grove and followed the path to the stone marking that bore her name. He knelt before the grave and produced a tiny bouquet of the wildflowers from the Naboo country-side from inside his robes, placing them gently upon the ground at the stone's base. Rising again, he offered a silent prayer that her sacrifice would not be in vain, and that her legacy would bear fruit one day.

The solemnity of the moment lingered for an eternity as the mists rolled in. The only disturbance came with the faint whine of an engine, and Obi-Wan looked up at the night sky as something sinister crept into the Force. It was his cue to leave, he knew. With a final farewell to one of his dearest friends, he withdrew and set off into the night, pausing only on a far-away hilltop to watch as the shuttle touched down outside the cemetery, its imposing passenger disembarking silently. Obi-Wan had known he might not be the only one who would seek this clandestine visit, and he wondered briefly how the Emperor would react if he knew that his prime agent was here, now, paying his respects to his long-dead heart and soul.

The dark-clad figure paused for a moment and glanced up in Obi-Wan's general direction. The Jedi stiffened slightly, but made no move. The moment suspended, and Obi-Wan knew he had to be imagining the slight yet respectful incline of the figure's head. Honour among the dead, he supposed, returning the gesture. The figure down below turned and continued on towards his destination and Obi-Wan resumed his silent trek across the fields to safety. Tonight a fragile truce had been observed and with the rising of the sun the hostilities would resume. Obi-Wan would be well on his way back to his exile on Tatooine before then, and Anakin Skywalker would retreat once more beneath the horrifying visage of Darth Vader.

Heh :) And five minutes after I posted it, I realized I could have made it longer with a remembrance or two of Qui-Gon and how this particular planet was the final resting place of two of his dearest and beloved friends.

But yeah. We forgot *sheepish*
