He stood gazing out the view port, cloak wrapped around him and arms crossed over his chest. All he could see was the dark, barren landscape of Polis Massa, and the starfield beyond the horizon. The facility was hidden within the rocks, just as he was hidden in the Force. He could never be open within it ever again, lest the new Emperor found him out. His life was gone, his friends all dead.
Just like me. For all intents and purposes, I am dead, too.
The living-dead, that is what he and Yoda had now become, while the other Jedi were merely dead. Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, all his friends and comrades were now one with the Force. And his best and dearest friend, his brother, his son, was not only a traitor but dead, too, by Obi-Wan's own hand.
No, check that. Obi-Wan never dealt the killing blow, but he may as well have. Anakin had burned to death in the flames of Mustafar, along with his treachery, but it had been too late. The dark deeds had been done.
Obi-Wan closed his eyes to the landscape and fought the tears that threatened to overwhelm him. He needed to be strong, for Padme's children. Yes, she and Anakin had borne children that were strong in the Force, but they needed to be protected from the dangers of existence. And Padme...oh, dear, beautiful Padme.
Why did you have to love him? Why did you love him? His love killed you...
She was being prepared now, to be returned to her beloved planet of Naboo. They had decided that it would be best if no one knew that the twins had been born, that they had died. It would be easier that way.
Obi-Wan knew he would do anything to ensure that Padme's legacy would live on. The last burning vestiges of hope for this darkened galaxy would be eternally etched within her children. He would make sure of that.
I promise you, Padme, I'll look after them.
To bear witness to his vow, and to seal it for eternity, a flare of light broke over the horizon, as the light from a distant star-gone-nova breached the silent wasteland of rock and ice.
Yes, a new era was commencing, and Obi-Wan would do everything he could to make sure it dawned bright, full and abounding with hope.
