He's not sure what to think of River Tam, the strange girl who can read his mind yet knows not the Force. But when they meet, or rather, when he steps onto her ship – because it is her ship – her presence fills his mind immediately and he can't escape her thoughts.

The broken fragments of her mind that make no sense to the others when she speaks her thoughts aloud are coherent and whole and frighteningly beautiful. She's a fighter and more than that, she's just a scared little girl who's had to grow up far too fast. He can sympathize, since he's had to do the same, and while they are both seventeen, they both carry the weight of a lifetime on their shoulders.

It comes as no surprise to him when she seeks him out during his morning exercises in the cargo-hold. Her mind brushes against his lightly as she perches on a box and he doesn't break stride. Her discordant aura is soothing to those who truly know how to read her, and the fragments of her sanity are more numerous than her brother can even imagine. It doesn't take her long to learn the steps, and soon she is joining him as they move through kata after kata.

A short time later and they move easily from katas to sparring. They begin slowly, the pace gradually increasing, until they are both a blur of movement. The harmony that flows between them makes the dance an unlikely combination of deadly grace, mutual respect and…something else. Lust perhaps, because love is forbidden to him, forbidden to her. Love makes them both dangerous.

While she harbours the feeling towards her older sibling and the crew that has taken her in, she knows she can't bring this stranger into the fold because it'll kill her when he leaves. And she knows he has to leave. He doesn't belong here, and that pains her. She can feel the deep well of his emotions, can feel that he is capable of love, but she can also feel his reticence. She knows from gleaned surface-thoughts that he is incapable of allowing his ability to care so deeply for another to rule him and she can feel anger welling up inside her at the injustice of it all. But lust, lust she can handle.

He harbours the feeling for his Master, in the way that a son loves a father, and he knows that to allow it to go beyond that and encompass another would be his undoing. He would be facing the choice of a lifetime ago and the fate of his journey would be in jeopardy. He knows he doesn't belong here. A Jedi doesn't truly belong anywhere except where he is needed, and once the need is gone he must move on. His time here with her is short, at best, his transient nature the key to all he holds dear. But lust, lust he can endure.

Neither is sure, exactly, when it happens, when lust takes over. All they know is that their bodies are slamming against a bulkhead and their lips are tangling desperately. Then they're sinking to the floor as lips part and tongues dance. Hands wander and clothing is discarded and then flesh meets flesh and they glory in it. Mental barriers come crashing down and they cling to each other in spirit as well as in body. Neither can contain the other, and the entire encounter ends explosively; they fall into each other as the ship melts away and nothing exists except a single, perfect moment in time.

They lie there for a long time before mutually coming to the decision that they should move. Someone could trip over them and that would be bad. The process of putting each other back together holds all the tenderness their coupling lacked, and a final, lingering kiss eternally seals the memory before they part forever.
