It's all Obi-Wan's fault. He's jealous! He knows I'm already more powerful than he is. He's holding me back!
- Anakin Skywalker, AOTC

"But why can't I?"

"Because I said so, Anakin. That's final!"

A door slams and a muffled, "I HATE YOU!" filters out. The Jedi Knight sighs. This is the fourth time this week that he and Anakin have had this argument. And it is the fourth time that the reaction has been the same. The boy was had only just turned thirteen and figured that the world now belonged to him. With a sigh, the young Knight places the palm of his hand flat on the door and hangs his head in sorrow. He whispers, "That's your prerogative as a teenager, my Padawan, but it is not your right as a Jedi."

Dejected, he lets his hand fall away as he turns and leaves, ignoring the looks from the others in the hallway.

"Master, I can do this!"

"Your skills aren't that refined, Anakin..."

A huffed reply cuts the Knight off, "You always say that!"

A strained silence follows as the blossoming young man turns and does it anyway. The execution is sloppy. The results acceptable, yet lackluster. The Knight doesn't even have time to cross his arms over his chest and raise his brow in the "I-told-you-so" gesture, as his charge glares at him and stalks off.

Their first mission apart, and the boy continues to def his orders. He failed to report to the Council, he failed to report to Obi-Wan and he had failed to have the decency to not get captured. And just when it looked like all these things were going to work out for the better, the youth fails to listen to his Master's experience and has paid the price, leaving both Jedi vulnerable and injured.

How many body parts must you lose, Anakin, before you start listening to me?

These walls have been in place for many years. They are the closest and best of friends, yes, but hidden within both is the nagging feeling of failure and guilt. One wishes that they could sit and open old wounds so that they can heal properly; one wishes that the other would leave well enough alone.

The walls prevent them from seeing into the other's heart of hearts. One would see the young boy, still looking for praise and affection and a modicum of support and confidence; one would see a true depth of love and acceptance, a salvation from the darkness within.

In the end, both fall back into old habits. One filled with sorrow and failure as he watched the man he had raised take up that mantle of hatred and focus it on the one whom he blamed for all his woes; one brimming with the righteous anger of a teenager who has been denied too much for too long by the one man he had respected and loved his entire life.
