"Master, what are you waiting for? He's getting away!"

"Patience, Obi-Wan. The time is not right."

Sputter. "But we have him! We can still catch-"

"No."

"But..."

Frown. "Not every battle must end with us apprehending the criminal, my Padawan. It is enough that we know who he is. Our brief engagement has revealed how he thinks. We can now anticipate his next move and set a trap. There will be less bloodshed, and no innocent bystanders will be put in danger."

Deep frown. Cowed. ...Not really. "Yes, Master."

Quietly, "It has taken me a long time to know when to run and when to fight, Obi-Wan. It wasn't until I met you that the lesson of true patience, of picking and choosing your battles, finally sunk in."

Incredulous look.

Soft chuckle. "Yes, my Padawan. When your safety came before bringing Xanatos to justice, I finally understood."

Longing look in the direction of the criminal. Shy smile. "Well, I suppose going after him would lead us into a trap, as he's the one dictating the battleground..."

Hearty laugh. "See? You can be taught!"

Blush.

It's all Obi-Wan's fault. He's jealous! He knows I'm already more powerful than he is. He's holding me back!

It was funny how things worked out. Here was a boy who could very well be the saviour of them all, yet nothing could be done about it. He couldn't be trained, because the disturbance within the Force would draw the Empire like hawkbats to granite slugs. He couldn’t be told the truth of his past, because Force knew he'd end up having a temper like his father, and he'd end up doing something rash. He couldn't associate with anyone from the past because he might not believe that discretion is the better part of valour, and demand why they couldn't advertise the fact that opposition was available in the form of the Jedi.

No, he had to remain a secret until the last possible moment, just as Obi-Wan knew he had to keep his distance from the child. The aunt and uncle, the child's foster-parents, had been quite adamant about that. Or, rather, the uncle had been. The aunt had given the Jedi the impression that she wouldn't mind a bit of help with a Force-sensitive child. But what was done was done, and Obi-Wan, as Luke, would have to stay in the shadows until the time was right. Luke would seek him out, he knew, and only when the galaxy was ready for certain events to be put into motion.

In the mean time, Obi-Wan would be the silent guardian, hiding in the darkness and keeping the family safe from prying eyes, as the last and possibly the greatest of the Jedi was allowed to grow up.

[OOC: Although the imagery I used near the end of this piece, as well as my gender-bending, suggests that this belongs in the same universe as my crack-tastic AU fic where Obi gets the Evil Make-over, it is actually one of those 'missing-scene' deals and is envisioned and written as a part of his GFFA canon. Please treat it as such. Thank you :) ]

My childhood ambition was to merely get through Temple Training alive in one piece at all....*

Let's try this again, shall we? )

*ooc: Yeah, that would be my lame-ass attempt at double-striking out. Carry on.
